During the Parks and Resorts Panel at the 2019 D23 Expo, Disney made some major announcements about a large overhaul of EPCOT. However, the following year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Disney announced some of those projects were being postponed or canceled altogether, while others continued to move forward.
One of those projects that were canceled was the World Celebration Festival Center. The multi-tiered festival center was to be located behind Spaceship Earth. In its place, Disney is constructing CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza. These two areas are named after the former Future World pavilions. They will serve as a multi-functional space that will be used during the park’s various festivals and be home to a Mickey & Friends meet and greet, a demo kitchen, a mixology bar, a gallery space, and more.
CommuniCore Construction
We visited EPCOT to see how construction is progressing.
In the center of this photo, just over the construction wall, we can see a cinderblock structure rising from the ground.
A closer look shows there is a second column behind the one on the left. These are likely part of the new CommuniCore Hall.
Here’s another look at those two structures currently being worked on.
Taking a wide view from the monorail of the entire area looking back towards the entrance of the park.
Opposite where the future CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza will be located, we can see the area has been cleared and is being prepped for various gardens and pathways.
Here is one more view looking northeast on the CommuniCore construction.
Above is the concept art of what the area is expected to look like when it opens in late 2023 to guests.
Journey of Water Inspired by Moana Construction Progress
As we continue our trip on the monorail, we check in next on how construction is going on Journey of Water Inspired by Moana.
Construction has been going fast and furious over at the Journey of Water Inspired by Moana attraction. This was one of those attractions announced in 2019 and is still moving forward.
As we round the bend, we can see the rock work, accented with faux moss, is coming along nicely. Just left from the center, we can see these tall, thin tree-like structures rising next to the rocks.
Here is another view of the rock work, including a large rock structure hidden under scaffolding in the background.
