Talisa Garcia has been cast in the upcoming “Willow” series by Lucasfilm set to air on Disney+ this year.
Garcia is the first openly transgender actor to be cast in a Lucasfilm production. She is also the first trans actor to portray a cis character in a Disney+ film or series.
The “Willow” series is a spinoff of the 1988 film starring Warwick Davis. In it, a princess assembles a party to join her on a quest to rescue her twin brother.
Garcia will play a relatively small speaking part and may only appear in one episode. She will be a Queen and the mother of one of the adventurers, played by Tony Revolori.
Garcia was cast before the recent controversy surrounding Disney and the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida. The series is already in post-production.
Other openly trans actors to appear in Disney projects have been Patti Harrison as the Chief of Tail in “Raya and the Last Dragon,” Zach Barack as one of Peter Parker’s classmates in “Spider-Man: Far Frome Home,” and Iris Menas as Anybodys in “West Side Story.”
