During a virtual town hall meeting with Disney employees today, CEO Bob Chapek spoke about the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and the company’s mistake in not responding to it sooner. Disney was found to have donated to every sponsor of the bill and Chapek only finally denounced it after it passed the Florida senate.
“I and the leadership team are determined to use this moment as a catalyst for more meaningful and lasting change,” he stated. Disney will be aggressive in opposing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s efforts to have the state investigate the parents of transgender children for child abuse charges.
The Walt Disney Company is also creating a task force “to develop action plans to make more LGBT-aware content for children and family” overseen by film executive Paul Roeder and marketing executive Lisa Becket. Other leaders will do a global listening tour of employees.
Disney employees have spoken out against Chapek’s previous response and some have planned walkouts for this week.
