On a trip to Downtown Disney, we stopped by Salt & Straw to try one of their monthly ice cream flavors that has come out of their vault. On our last trip, we tried their Salted Caramel Cupcake ice cream. Opting for something fruity this time, we gave the Strawberry Tres Leches flavor a try.
Strawberry Tres Leches Ice Cream – $6.25 (One Scoop)
We set out to make the yummiest strawberry ice cream we could dream up, calling back to the sweet, pink-hued flavor memories of our childhood. The result? A rich strawberry ice cream made with roasted Oxnard strawberries, a touch of salt, and sweet cream swirled with creamy tres leches cake—lightly spiced cinnamon sponge cake soaked in sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk until it resembles cake batter—piped in like icing. Finished off with a swirl of bright strawberry vanilla jam, we consider this mission accomplished.
The base of this ice cream has a rich refreshing strawberry flavor that’s blended with local roasted Oxnard strawberries. We couldn’t really tell that the strawberries were roasted, they seemed raw, but they were sweet nonetheless.
The strawberry vanilla jam was definitely the most distinct flavor in the ice cream, and was more strawberry with just a hint and aftertaste of vanilla.
The lightly spiced cinnamon sponge cake soaked in sweetened condensed milk was excellent, it wasn’t soggy in the ice cream as it was more of a cake batter than actual pieces.
The cinnamon flavor was very very subtle. We wish there was a higher ratio of jam and cake in this ice cream, then it would have been perfect.
This is a great option for anyone looking for a refreshing treat on a hot day in Downtown Disney. Be sure to check out some of the other desserts currently available at Disneyland Resort, like the new crispy treat from Trolley Treats.
