The Hashtag Show is reporting a rumor that Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) will be trading in her legs for a pair of fins when she takes on the role of Ariel in Disney’s live action version of “The Little Mermaid”.

From The Hashtag Show:

Walt Disney Studios has found much success with their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films grossing over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. So it should come as no surprise that Disney is hard at work on a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.  As memorable as the characters are from the animated film, Disney maybe going a new route with new film, in casting a woman of color in the lead role.
We have heard from someone close to the studio that ex-Disney Channel star Zendaya has been offered the leading role of Ariel. Disney and reps for Zendaya declined to comment. This news would likely mean that the role of King Triton would also go to an actor of color.
Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda will team up to compose the music for the film, as well as add new songs to the film. Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is set to helm the film, from a script by Jane Goldman (X-Men: Days Of Future Past). Production on the film is expected to take place in Puerto Rico and Cape Town Africa.
The next remakes coming from Disney are Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Jon Favreau’s The Lion King, Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, Mulan which just recently began production and Maleficent 2, which also finally kicked off filming recently. This is something the studio is clearly going to keep doing until the money absolutely dries up.
The Little Mermaid does not have a release date set.
