Disneyland has just filed a permit to renovate the existing interior space of the second level of the former Starcade at Space Mountain. This 5,000 sq ft area will become indoor air-conditioned queue space for the attraction, and the existing roof deck queue will be modified to feed into the indoor area.
Since the 1990’s, the second level has been vacant and mostly off-limits to guests. There was a set of speedramps from the first level, but these were blocked at various times by arcade games, pressed penny machines, and curtains, and eventually removed altogether.
There was an X-Wing Starfighter from Star Wars suspended from the ceiling over the speedramps, but it was moved to Star Trader following the opening of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue in 2011.
The PeopleMover track used to glide by the windows, giving guests a look into the Starcade, but that was changed after the attraction’s closure in 1995 when the windows were blacked out.
Last year, the Starcade was given new life as a private event venue for large parties or groups.
I have great memories of Starcade from my childhood.
It’ll be nice to spend time in that space again, even if it’s just waiting in line for Space Mountain.
