A new prop has appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Magic Kingdom, one that should be familiar to fans of the popular film series based on the classic ride…
The glass case at the very back of the beach scene looks just like the one used to transport the captured mermaid in the 4th film in the Pirates series, On Stranger Tides.
We also have a video to share of the new prop:
It is unknown if the prop is the actual one from the movie, but it is at least a rather convincing replica of the glass cage featured in the film.
In October 2012, a mermaid scene was added to Pirates of the Caribbean at the Magic Kingdom, projecting images of mermaids onto the surface of the water. The mermaid skeleton on the beach was also added at this time. The projection was turned off quite a while ago, but a similar or updated effect is expected to debut at the attraction soon, especially with the addition of the case which also calls back to these characters from the last film.
Other small changes have been made to the attraction lately, including the removal of the “Dead Men Tell No Tales” banner outside of the ride. Further changes are expected leading into 2017 when a larger enhancement of the attraction is expected to take place.
They really need to bring back those projections.
Give us Shanghai Pirates with full projections and updated animatronics.
Exactly, its awesome.
I’d rather they not give us full projections. I am down for the updated animatronics, but I don’t think the screen projections look that great.
The pirates fith movie coming in 2017, right?
Isn’t there a water effect of mermaid tails splashing in the water when leading up to the beach scene?
The tails splash…sometimes. I went on last week and the water effect was there, as was the singing. But no projections of light to show the actual mermaid. Just water movement.
That glass cage prop is actually from the attraction The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. They just started tearing down the interior of the attraction a few months ago, and some of the props from the treasure cave will probably be recycled and used in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
