The Halcyon is a luxury starcruiser that offers guests an immersive “Star Wars” experience. From the moment visitors step aboard, they are not only transported to a galaxy far, far away, but also provided with a variety of “Star Wars” themed amenities. One of these that guests can experience aboard this unique “cruise ship” voyage is interacting with the concierge droid, D3-O9.
D3-O9, also spelled Deethree-Ohnine, is a protocol droid designed to help guests with whatever they need on the Halcyon. She can answer questions about the ship, the galaxy, and even make reservations for dining and entertainment. D3-O9 also holds a wealth of knowledge about the Halcyon’s history and lore.

D3-O9’s Lore & History
D3-O9’s fictitious history within “Star Wars” lore states the droid was built centuries ago by the founder of Chandrila Star Line, the company that owns the Halcyon Starcruiser.
In reality, D3-O9 was created by a team of Imagineers at Walt Disney Imagineering. The team was led by John Snoddy, Executive of R&D–Technology & Engineering, and included Leslie Evans, Executive R&D Imagineer, as well as Doug Fidaleo, Director, Disney Research Lab.
The team worked for several years to develop D3-O9. They used a variety of technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. They also worked closely with Lucasfilm to ensure that D3-O9 was authentic to the “Star Wars” universe. The result is a helpful, true-to-lore droid able to assist guests with a myriad of questions, tasks, and requests.
D3-O9’s Personality and Role Aboard the Halcyon
D3-O9 is a friendly and helpful droid who is always willing to help guests in any way she is able. She is eager to share immense knowledge about the Halcyon and the galaxy at large. This droid is available to chat both within the Halcyon’s main lobby as well as within each guest room.
In each cabin, the droid is designed to only listen to guests when called upon; however, if a guest finds this to be a privacy concern in their private quarters, the droid’s functionality can be completely turned off by request. Simply ask a Cast Member for assistance if needed.
If guests choose to keep the droid turned on, it interacts with visitors via an panel on the wall within each room. D3-O9 has the ability to brief guests on mission elements and details regarding quests and immersive experiences found on board in addition to its concierge functions.
D3-O9 will gladly chat about “Star Wars” lore and history, and is always ready to answer any questions that guests may have. She is programmed to be a friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable droid who is available to help with a variety of things, including:
- Answering questions about the Halcyon and the galaxy
- Making reservations for dining and entertainment
- Telling a bedtime story
- Providing directions
- Giving information about onboard quests and immersive experiences
D3-O9 is a groundbreaking achievement in interactive technology. This droid is also the first artificial intelligence to be featured in a Disney Parks attraction.
