New Dooney & Bourke satchels, tote bags, and wristlet wallets designed by Joey Chou were seen on display at the Creations shop in EPCOT today.
All items in the collection are designed by longtime artist Joey Chou. A description of his background is attached to each piece’s information and details on the shopDisney website:
Joey Chou was born in Taiwan and grew up in Southern California. After graduating from Art Center College of Design with an illustration degree, he has been working as a Visual Development artist in feature and TV animation for the past ten years. He has also worked on a number of children’s book illustrations as well as some large-scale installations. His graphic style is influenced by many great illustrators of the 1960s.
Let’s take a look at all of these designer bags in detail:
Joey Chou Collection Satchel – $298
- 9 1/2″ H x 12″ W x 5 1/4″ D
- Handle Drop: 4″
- Strap Drop: 15 1/2″
This satchel consists of deep purple stitched leather, silvertone hardware, and a removable handtag reading “Design by Joey Chou for Disney.” The pattern features various Disney Parks landmarks depicted in a playful and nostalgic style.
Dumbo appears, the Cheshire Cat, Stitch riding Space Mountain, the dog clutching the prison key from Pirates of the Caribbean, Tinker Bell casting a magical pixie spell, Mickey Mouse conducting the railroad, the Partners Statue characteristic of most park hubs, the Haunted Mansion hatbox ghost, the Jungle Cruise, Cinderella Castle, and more.
The interior of this faux leather bag is aqua blue.
In an interview with the official Disney Parks Blog, Chou offers a bit more context on his personal creative process for the pieces in the collection:
I looked at a lot of vintage Disneyland and Walt Disney World ride designs for inspiration, incorporating modern color palettes and my personal art styles. I often started with simple geometric shapes and played around with compositions and later refined them with character details to make the pieces come to life.
Joey Chou Collection Wristlet Wallet – $188
- 4 1/2″ H x 8 1/2″ W x 1″ D
- Wrist Strap Length: 7″
This wristlet wallet consists of deep purple stitched leather, silvertone hardware, and a small leather strap. Its interior is aqua blue, and essentially shares the same patterns as the satchel.
Joey Chou Collection Tote Bag – $348
- 11 1/4″ H x 13 3/4″ W x 5 1/4″ D
- Strap Drop: 11 1/2″
This tote consists of deep purple stitched leather, silvertone hardware, and a removable handtag reading “Design by Joey Chou for Disney.” Its interior is also aqua blue like the other pieces, but differs in its exterior presentation.
The pattern itself matches the satchel; however, while the satchel only presents Joey Chou’s patterns, the tote imposes them on a scene, with Magic Kingdom as the focus. As Big Thunder Mountain and “it’s a small world” rest beneath the fireworks, an entire landscape of characters and attractions pops out.
