When guests visit Walt Disney World, it is incredibly common to see them whip out their phones to capture the moment. Unlike other Orlando theme parks such as Universal Orlando Resort, filming on attractions at Disney World is typically allowed — but now things are changing.
Disney has put out signage at the Magic Kingdom attraction Space Mountain which indicates that guests can no longer film or hold their phones while they ride. This rule applies for any handheld items, loose articles, as well as items such as phones and cameras. Items are required to be stored during the duration of the ride, in either a bag or the pouch attached to the ride vehicle.
These signs are visible in the entryway of the attraction.
They also appear prior to boarding the attraction.
It seems that filming on the attraction is not the main cause for concern, but rather the safety of the guests riding the coaster. Cast Members noted that there have been a few incidents of guests dropping their items while the ride is in motion, which has created a cause for concern for other riders. Considering multiple coasters are moving at once, with riders above and beneath each other constantly, it is easy to understand how dropping an item could potentially harm someone else riding the attraction.

At the current moment, it seems that only Space Mountain has implemented this new rule, and all other attractions at Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Epcot are still allowing handheld items as well as filming with cameras or phones.

Guardians of the Galaxy specifically instructs riders to put away their cell phones and says that filming of any kind is strictly prohibited during the preshow. It is very clear.
They allow filming, they consider his line a joke.
It could also be that an older ride like space doesnt have the amount of G another does to hold stuff in heck i feel like on certain drops i am coming out of the seat. Besides why do we have to record everything why can we not just enjoy stuff anymore? Is it just me?

As old as Space Mountain is this is not trying to keep something secret, it probably is all about safety and frankly the issues associated with items being dropped. Even an I-phone in the head can be dangerous.
An interesting thing Disney could do is provide a link to a video of well done interior shots of various attractions, that people could use to show their friends….. Then maybe people could just keep their phone in their pocket and enjoy the attraction.
Probably a combination of schmucks dropping mobile phones and putting their video lights on while riding in the dark.
It doesn’t look like it rules out gimbles or other fixed arm camera harnesses. Do you know if they are also excluded or if the words “secured on the person” allows them?
When I was there last week they enforced the same rule on all the roller coasters. (Rockin, Cosmic Rewind, Seven Dwarves, etc) and I saw a lot of folks told to put phones away. They wouldn’t launch new coasters unless everyone had. No signage tho
Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster has always been strict about it.
I had no idea it was allowed before. It seems obvious that dropping a phone could be dangerous when riding a fast ride like space mountain, aerosmith, tower of terror, etc.
