REVIEW: Chocolate-Cherry Yule Log Shake & Dulce de Leche Mickey Shake at Disney California Adventure

The holidays have come to Schmoozies!, the specialty beverage, milkshake, and smoothie spot at Disney California Adventure’s Hollywood Land.

This quick service location is offering two seasonal shakes — a Chocolate-Cherry Yule Log Shake and a Dulce de Leche Mickey Shake. We stopped by to try them both.

Chocolate-Cherry Yule Log Shake – $12.99

The Chocolate-Cherry Yule Log Shake is a festive-looking milkshake. The dripping chocolate sauce intermingles with the chocolate cherry milkshake. The outside of the rim is covered in green sanding sugar and holiday red sprinkles. A piece of yule log cake is sandwiched between two swirls of whipped cream and topped with a maraschino cherry.

The slice of yule log cake is a chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate filling. Now, a word of advice about the yule log cake — try to eat it last. We found this was a sugar bomb. Although it was the highlight of this holiday milkshake, the flavor was so prominent, it threw off the palate for the rest of the drink.

Unfortunately, the cherry part of this chocolate-cherry milkshake is very mild, much more than we expected. We would have preferred a little more cherry flavor to counteract the chocolate ice cream.

Although chocolate ice is the predominant flavor here, it is also not very strong. In this case, two flavors don’t make a shake. Overall, the shake was fine, but the slice of yule log cake was definitely the highlight.

Dulce de Leche Mickey Shake – $9.49

The dulce de leche milkshake fills the cup and has a holiday band of green sanding sugar with red sprinkles accenting the outside rim. A rosette of “whipped topping” sits atop with caramel sauce cascading down the crevices. Red sprinkles and green sanding sugar also garnish the top. The shake is finished off with two vanilla crème cookies — in other words, two Golden Oreo sandwich cookies.

It wouldn’t be a holiday at Disneyland without a shake that uses Oreos for mouse ears. And this year’s offering is a dulce de leche milkshake.

Traditionally, dulce de leche, also known as caramelized milk or milk jam, has a rich, caramel flavor, however, in this milkshake, it is so subtle that it was barely noticeable.

That’s not a bad thing, but it comes out as a slight upgrade from a vanilla shake. It is not terribly interesting or unique. If you are looking for a more flavorful vanilla milkshake with that “je ne sais quoi,” this could be a good choice. However, we would probably skip this one in favor of the Yule log shake.
