There’s a lot packed into this dish. We found 2 mussels, a potato cut in half, 2 pieces of sausage, 3 shrimp, a crawfish, a piece of corn, and a tiny claw. The only thing we didn’t like was the potato. It was chalky and had a weird texture, but everything else is great. The boil has great flavor. There’s a beautiful flavoring in the broth that elevates this dish. Aside from the potato, this was a winner.

*NEW* Spicy Chicken Gumbo with Andouille Sausage and BEN’S ORIGINAL™ Long Grain & Wild Rice – $6.25

Don’t let the appearance fool you. This is probably one of the better dishes, if not the best one, at the festival.

There was definitely a kick of spice in the right places. The roux was nice and dark, which is common in more authentic gumbos because that means it’s been cooked down longer.

It was hearty with decent portions of chicken and gumbo. We loved this!

Grilled Oysters with Cajun Butter – $7.50

The oysters, which we were told were from the Gulf of Mexico, were well-seasoned, but tasted a little old. They were pretty mediocre.

*NEW* House-made Boudin Bites featuring BEN’S ORIGINAL™ Long Grain White Rice – $5.50

boudin bites 1

The boudin has changed since it debuted, but these were still good. Though it’s definitely boudin, the crust has more of a breaded consistency that you find with hush puppies.

boudin bites 2

It’s not as moist or dense as traditional boudin, which is sometimes made with a rice dressing.

The rice underneath was redundant but overall, it was rather good and we enjoyed this a lot.

Pecan Praline – $4.25

The pecan praline tasted like edible sand. It’s sweet but just sort of crumbles in your mouth. We definitely couldn’t eat one of these alone.

Bayou Cocktail: Bayou Spiced Rum ($18/bottle), Coconut Rum, Fruit Punch and Minute Maid® Orange Juice – $12.00

This was a basic concoction, but we really enjoyed it. It was nicely balanced between both rums, fruit juice and the orange juice. Tropical and delicious, it tasted like Mardi Gras to us. As far as premixed cocktails are concerned, this is one of the better options at the festival. Grab one of these, sit back and let the good times roll!

81Bay Brewing Co. Orange Coriander Wheat Ale, Tampa, FL (5.8% ABV) – $5.00 for 6 oz., $9.00 for 12 oz.

81Bay Brewing Co. describes their beer as a “wheat ale with coriander and orange peel.”

Wicked Weed Brewing Day Light American Light Ale, Asheville, NC (4.1% ABV) – $5.00 for 6 oz., $9.00 for 12 oz.

Untappd describes this beer as an “American light ale with 105 calories.”

Parish Brewing Co. Ghost in the Machine Double IPA, Broussard, LA (8.5% ABV) – $5.00 for 6 oz., $9.00 for 12 oz.

From Parish Brewing Co.: “Welcome to the future. Our collective human consciousness, or Ghost in the Machine, has gained a tolerance for hops beyond what mankind has ever known before. This double India Pale Ale is the necessary outcome. Brewed with obscene quantities of hand-selected Citra hops from our favorite farm in Yakima Valley, WA. Expect pungent grapefruit aromas and flavors, tropical fruit, and less harsh bitterness than most IIPAs.”
