Disney English Closes Learning Centers After 12 Years

Back in January of this year, Disney English closed their learning centers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, switching to online learning. Although Disney theme parks in China have reopened, most recently, Hong Kong Disneyland, it seems that after careful consideration, Disney will not be reopening its learning centers according to an article from The Shine.

Disney English opened its first center in 2008 in Shanghai, eventually expanding to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Shenzhen. Its goal was to teach English to children across China. It did so through playing games, storytelling, building relationships, etc. It also gave Foreign Trainers from other countries the opportunity to experience and truly immerse themselves in Chinese culture. You can learn more about Disney English on their website.

Mahesh Samat, Walt Disney Co’s executive vice president, stated: “Over the past few years, we have noticed a shift in consumer preferences toward online learning experiences and this trend has been accelerated by the global pandemic as families are hesitant to resume in-person supplemental learning classes.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to not reopen the centers. We are ensuring that each family of a Disney English learner is refunded accordingly, and we are taking care of each and every one of our affected cast members. “

While it is sad to see Disney English shut its doors after 12 years of educating young children, hopefully we will see more children’s education programs like this in the future.
