It’s been a long wait, but during Square Enix’s E3 media briefing, we finally got our first look at Marvel’s Avengers. Along with the game’s first look, we learned tons about this upcoming action-adventure, including its release date of May 15th, 2020.

Marvel’s Avengers can be played either solo or cooperatively with up to four players. Players will be able to choose from five heroes: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow. The game will continue to grow and evolve over the course of multiple years, adding new areas of the game, story content, and additional superheroes to the roster. However, unlike most service games, Marvel’s Avengers will offer all of its added content for free, and developer Crystal Dynamics has already promised there will be no sign of loot boxes anywhere.

The trailer shows a detailed look at our heroes, who look eerily like the their MCU counterparts, yet distinctly different. One might even say they look like the Uncanny Avengers (humor me). The trailer shows a serious and dark tone for this Avengers universe as Captain America tragically passes in an accident caused during an Avengers celebration in San Francisco. For a more detailed look at the game, as well as for some added information from Marvel and Crystal Dynamics, check out this extended reveal below. At the end of this trailer, Hank Pym is shown with Tony Stark, alluding to Ant-Man’s inclusion in the game.

Pre-orders for the game are available now, and those that pre-order on PS4 will receive access to a beta that will take place at an undetermined time. PS4 players will also receive some added content as part of a platform exclusive deal for the game, but details are currently scarce on just what that content is. Aside from PS4, Marvel’s Avengers will also be available for Xbox One, PC, and Google’s upcoming streaming platform, Stadia.

Marvel’s Avengers is being developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider), with co-development efforts coming from Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided), with additional help from Nixxes Software, and newly-formed studio Crystal Northwest. Square Enix first announced the game over two years ago, and then went silent until recently when the game’s reveal was teased for E3.
